The world without women

The date was 8th March 2020. It was international women’s day. I posted on my WhatsApp status, “Just imagine the world without women, Happy international women’s Day”. I wasn’t expecting any answers when I put that there. All I said was imagine. But I got people responding. The most outstanding ones where “Chaotic” and the other was a “Peaceful abode”. From a woman and a man respectively. The woman I am, couldn’t help but agree with the chaotic..lol and also not just strongly disagree with the peaceful abode, but actually took him on. How could he say the world would have been a peaceful abode without women. Maybe the world could be, but not for men. Yes! I said it. Do I have to keep reminding men how God realized it wasn’t good for him to be alone and thus he will make him a helpmate and viola a woman came to being? I believe whenever men think they can do without women, God just smiles and says “you don’t know what you talking about, you need a helpmate ma guy”. A wise man recently drew my attention to the fact that a helper is stronger or more capable than the person they are offering help to. If you could do it why then will you require help? If a man would be ok by himself why a helpmate? I also think we need help because on our own we might not be able to accomplish much hence the need for a helper to make us realize our set goals. So how then, can a descendant of Adam, born of an Eve,  say that the world would have been a peaceful abode without a woman?

The Ant and the Sluggard

I realized after day one that I needed a homestay plan. So I planned one in my mind..lol. It was a simple one. It didn't need any notebook and pen. Morning time with God, morning workout, afternoon naps(I miss having them), reading and writing and watching movies till 12midnight...all the other activities will fit in somewhere... I didn't only convince myself about this, I convinced my best friend about this plan and he even went ahead to send me a workout plan for a bigger and firmer butt. I'm sure he was tired of all the noise I make about my butt when it's so obvious there's nothing there..😂😂. Day one went well and I knew I wasn't going to be bored because I'm an indoor person so all this stay home, stay safe was nothing new to me. On the fourth day, my brother came to my room and was telling me about our neighbours who had drawn tomato, a game on the floor and jumping all over. He went like they are so bored they ended up doing that and here I was in bed, watching movies as if nothing is happening in the world... Akua bored, forget. Anyways that's not the reason for this write-up, I will talk about that another time.

History will Remember

After the last write up on the Palm tree, I got people replying to me personally about how they enjoyed and learnt from it. However, a childhood friend told me he was expecting to read something about the Coronavirus instead of what I posted. Yes, it was good but the times we are in, he was expecting something related to it. Seriously, it hadn't occurred to me. I was reading so much on Covid-19 but the last thing on my mind was writing about it. So for a week, I thought of what to write. At a point, I thought it wasn't necessary because a lot had been said about it already until I chanced on the Status of my brother Nana. It was a poem written by Donna Ashworth. I needed to be sure she wrote it before I quote her as writer and indeed she did, I ended up loving other things she had written...but this poem has become a favourite of mine in these times, "History will remember when the world stopped". Take your time and read through it twice and let's continue our conversation.

Not all are Palm trees

My house was badly affected by the non-stop rains that hit Accra last season. The passage route for the water was blocked. The vicinity was flooded – with no escape route for the rainwater, I ended up living on an ‘island’. Water always finds its way, so this time, it broke walls and found its way into rooms. As though that was not enough, there was still a large amount of water stagnant around the house like a pond. All efforts previously to get help with the cause of the situation had fallen on deaf ears till it hit us hard.

The water destroyed a lot of things but ‘one family’ did not look affected. Coming from a farming background, my old man and his wife has a mini-farm around the house. They had planted plantain, tomatoes, cocoyam, mango tree and two palm trees. As the water remained stagnant all the plants started dying. It was a sad sight. Too much of everything is indeed bad. The same water these plants needed to grow, in excess, ended up killing them. Even the aloe vera plant I thought loved water ended up dying. I watched sadly as the leaves on the mango tree fell off, leaving only branches. The plantain trees just fell and the others were completely covered by the water but not the palm tree family. They stood their grounds.

Memories

I had some good memories in KNUST; I look back now and smile. I remember the waakye at Queen's Hall. That "waakye" was bae and a lifesaver. I remember the drama and choreography groups I belonged to, Mass Drama and Ministering Marshalls. I would give anything to go back for the all-night rehearsals for Intellecto and Inspiropera. It wasn't just about the dancing and drama, we found bonds that still hold now. We made brothers, sisters and even mothers and fathers there who still are relevant in our lives. Shout out to my daddy Andy!!😜. The drink up people too were there..😂😂. I remember my friends had a drink up party and they served Lipton and added apple juice to the tea. They called it punch. Drink-up parties were fun for me till they decided to be switching off the lights.…😊 But those were good times.

Lay Low or Stand Tall

This life observation got my attention and actually got me to watch this movie titled Tall Girl. I am about 5ft 7inch but I don't think I'm a tall girl. Everyone in my house is taller than me so when people tell me I'm tall I roll my eyes. I know girls who are tall so I don't see myself as tall. This movie actually makes you realise that yeah some girls are tall. The first scene is set in a library where a pretty girl is seen reading, and directly opposite her is a guy reading the same book. The guy manages to get her into a conversation about the book. However, his interest is not in the book or what the girl thinks about it, he just wants to hit on the pretty girl. Guess what, his plan works perfectly until he approaches the girl and when she gets up from her seat, OMG, he realizes she's tall, the Goliath kind of tall. Like a bad dream, every bit of the crush or liking for the girl vanishes.

Don’t let the stress get you!

Stress cannot be eradicated from our lives. It will always be there but we can learn to reduce it. I read some interesting things about reducing stress which I never thought of. The first is this, keep a positive attitude. When you do that, you free your mind, and thoughts of things that get you stressed are taken away. Learn to relax. Rest is not a luxury, it's a necessity. That's why God created a day in the week for rest. Accept that there are events that you cannot control and let it go. Superman doesn't solve every problem he encounters. And by the way, if you can control every event, what will God be doing? Leave some to Him, please😝. Exercise regularly and eat healthily. I know I'm talking to myself now. Finally, learn to manage your time more effectively.

CROSSOVER

Some of us are excited about the coming year. We strongly believe things are going to change for good in the coming year. We feel we are leaving the land or should I say the year of slavery, hardship and the like and moving on to freedom and better days - a new beginning. Sometimes I see the New Year as a new page, a fresh start. Other times I see the New Year as a continuation of the previous; what if nothing really changes. Because most of the times nothing really changes. The future is a continuation of the present. So you see, there's always the fear of the future. Some people are dreading the coming year. But hey, the future is not certain and so what? At a point in my life, I would always say, “what do I stand to lose” when I had to make a bold step into the future. I have lost so much in the past already so why should I fear to lose? I step into the future hoping to gain this time, if I don't, it's just another loss like the ones in the past and they don't stop me.
